EMDR: What to Expect (Before • During • After)

EMDR helps your brain reprocess stuck memories. Here’s a simple overview so you feel prepared and in control.

 Before

  • We’ll build resources (calm place, container, anchors) so you have a strong safety net.

  • You control the pace. We only move forward when you feel ready.

  • Eat, hydrate, and plan light time after sessions if possible.

During

  • You’ll follow bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones).

  • We touch the memory in short sets, pause to notice what changes, and let your brain lead.

  • You can stop, slow, or take a break at any time. Hand signal is always available.

After

  • You might feel lighter, tired, or emotionally stirred for 24–48 hrs—this is common.

  • Use your resources (calm place, breathing, grounding).

  • Jot notes/dreams. Bring anything that comes up back to session.

For first responders & military:
We pace EMDR to fit shift work and operational stress. We’ll track current triggers (sirens, smells, call types) and build tailored reset plans you can use on duty.
